Mangrove Honey

10 years ago we were on a trip exploring the Mangrove forests 🌳 of Sunderbans. On our cruise across the Brahmaputra our guide mentioned casually that every year at least 10 honey harvesters die of tiger attacks 🐯, while harvesting the Mangrove honey. Popularly known as Blood honey🩸for the toll it takes on harvesters, this honey is one of the rarest honeys in the world.

The mangrove forests 🌳 consists of 100s of kms of diverse flora which the bees forage on to produce this honey. It so intrigued us when they mentioned that the harvesters wear tiger masks to deceive the tigers if they try to attack from behind.🐅

In recent times the government & NGOs together have taken steps to make honey harvesting safe in the Sunderbans.This year we have received a 10 day old harvest of Mangrove honey, straight from across the Brahmaputra.
